Nearly 100,000 Crashes Hit Colorado Roads in 2024. Is Your Family Prepared?

Every day, Coloradans climb into their cars, trucks, and motorcycles without a second thought. Most trips end safely. But according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), nearly 100,000 crashes occurred on Colorado roads in 2024 alone, leaving thousands of families dealing with injuries, mounting medical bills, and questions they never expected to face.

If you or someone you love has been hurt in a car accident in Colorado, understanding the scope of what's happening on our roads and what your legal rights are can make all the difference. Our attorneys at Anderson Hemmat have spent over 30 years handling injury claims across this state, and the numbers from last year tell a story every driver should hear.

The 2024 Colorado Crash Numbers Are Sobering

The CDOT data from 2024 paints a clear picture: Colorado roads are dangerous, and crashes are not distributed evenly across crash types or locations.

Rear-end collisions led all crash types at 27,950 incidents, by far the most common type statewide. These crashes often seem minor at first, but they are a leading cause of whiplash, cervical spine injuries, and traumatic brain injuries that don't always show up immediately. If someone rear-ended you and you felt okay at the scene, that feeling can change within 24 to 72 hours.

T-bone (broadside) collisions were the second most common type, accounting for 15,083 crashes. These are among the most dangerous because the side of a vehicle offers far less protection than the front or rear. Broken bones, internal organ damage, and serious head trauma are common outcomes.

Rollover crashes, while less frequent at 2,503 incidents statewide, are disproportionately deadly. They are particularly common in SUVs and pickup trucks on Colorado's mountain roads and rural highways.

Denver and Colorado Springs Are Crash Hotspots

Colorado's two largest cities, both of which we serve from our Denver and Colorado Springs offices, are where the numbers concentrate.

Denver alone recorded 15,701 crashes in 2024, resulting in more than 5,500 injuries and 62 fatalities. That breaks down to roughly 43 crashes every single day within city limits. Broadside collisions made up nearly 18% of Denver crashes, while rear-end accidents accounted for close to 28% of the total.

Pedestrian and bicycle crashes are a growing concern as well. Denver reported 590 pedestrian crashes and 264 crashes involving bicycles or e-bikes in 2024. The outcomes for people on foot or on a bike are almost always severe, given the physical mismatch with a motor vehicle.

Colorado Springs and El Paso County follow similar trends, with Powers Boulevard and Academy intersections consistently appearing in crash cluster data.

If you were injured in a crash anywhere in Colorado, you have the right to pursue compensation for your injuries, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Our team offers free case evaluations and is available 24/7 by phone, text, or email.

Motorcycles: The Deadliest Risk on Colorado Roads

Motorcycle crashed on side of road

Of all vehicle types, motorcyclists face the most disproportionate risk. In 2024, motorcycles were involved in 3,157 crashes across Colorado, a relatively small share of the nearly 100,000 total. More than half of those crashes, 1,626 of them, resulted in at least one serious injury. Eighty-two motorcycle crashes were fatal.

That fatality rate dwarfs every other vehicle category. The cause is almost always the same: another driver failed to see the motorcycle, typically during a left turn, lane change, or merging maneuver.

Motorcycle injury cases require attorneys who understand both the law and the bias many insurance adjusters carry into these claims. At Anderson Hemmat, we've spent decades fighting for motorcyclists who were not at fault but were still lowballed or outright ignored by insurance companies.

What These Numbers Mean for Your Injury Claim

Raw statistics matter beyond road safety awareness. They matter directly for your legal case.

Colorado follows a modified comparative fault rule. Under C.R.S. §13-21-111, you can still recover compensation as long as you are less than 50% at fault for the crash. Insurance companies know this, and they routinely use ambiguous crash circumstances to assign you more blame than you deserve, reducing what they have to pay out.

Colorado's statute of limitations for personal injury claims is three years from the date of the accident under C.R.S. §13-80-101. Miss that deadline and your right to compensation is gone, permanently. Don't wait until you feel well enough to deal with it. Call us first.

Colorado also raised its non-economic damage caps in 2025 under House Bill 24-1472. Pain and suffering compensation can now reach up to $1.5 million for cases filed on or after January 1, 2025, more than double the previous limit. That shift makes having an aggressive, trial-ready attorney more important than ever.

You Were One of Almost 100,000. But Your Case Is Not a Number.

The statistics stop mattering the moment it's you on the side of the road, waiting for an ambulance, or sitting in an ER wondering how you're going to pay for everything that comes next.

At Anderson Hemmat, we are a family-owned, boutique Colorado law firm. We do not hand your case off to a paralegal and check in every few months. Our attorneys know your name, know your case, and keep you updated every step of the way. We work on a contingency basis, meaning you pay nothing unless we win, and we offer free case evaluations so there's no risk in reaching out.

We don't settle just to close a file. We are trial-ready, and insurance companies in Colorado know it. That reputation changes how they negotiate.
